Lightweight Rainwear Wholesale Guide: How to Choose PVC, PU, Oxford and PEVA for Bulk Orders
Buying lightweight rainwear in bulk is rarely a question of “which jacket looks good”. It is a question of which construction fits your program, which details must be written into the PO, and how to keep the second order identical to the first. This guide is written for distributors, importers, PPE brands, chain-store and tender buyers who need to specify, compare and approve rainwear before committing to volume.
The models referenced below all come from our lightweight rainwear collection, with OEM and private label options and FOB terms available.
Start With the Buyer Requirement, Not the Fabric
Most sourcing mistakes happen because the fabric was chosen before the program was defined. Start from your priority, then confirm the specification points listed in the last column when you request a quote.
| If your priority is… | Consider | Models | Specify in the RFQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest cost for basic rain protection | 170T polyester, PVC coated (0.18–0.20mm) | DL1112, DL1114, DL1055, DL1130 | Base fabric, coating thickness, seam construction, hood style |
| High-volume promotional, event or emergency stock | 0.10mm PEVA film, one size | DL1118 | Film thickness, poncho dimensions, logo printing, carton quantity |
| Repeated daily use on site | Oxford-based construction: 200D Oxford PVC (0.20–0.25mm) or PU-coated Oxford | DL3001, DL1018 | Denier, coating type and thickness, tape layout, colors |
| A softer, more garment-like look for a workwear or retail range | Polyester PU (0.45mm) | DL1193, DL1194, DL1407, DL3026 | Lining, men’s/women’s cut, size range, material compliance documents |
| A high-visibility safety program | Hi-vis fabric plus a defined reflective tape layout | DL1113, DL1147, DL1014 | Target standard and class, tape drawing, test documentation |
| Compact, packable stock for outdoor ranges | Ripstop polyester with carry pouch | DL1061 | Colors, pouch and packaging format |
PVC vs PU vs Oxford vs PEVA: What Actually Differs
“Oxford” is a woven base fabric, not a coating, and it can be coated with PVC or PU. PVC, PU and PEVA describe what sits on or replaces the fabric. That is why the same garment style can be offered at very different price points and hand feel.
| Construction | Cost position | Hand feel | Durability | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PEVA film | Lowest | Thin, light film | Short-life, light use | Promotional, event, emergency |
| PVC-coated polyester (170T/190T) | Low | Firmer | Good for general use; depends on coating and seams | Price-sensitive workwear and utility programs |
| PVC or PU-coated Oxford | Mid | Sturdier, heavier base | Built for tougher repeated wear | Contractor, site and industrial programs |
| Polyester PU (0.45mm) | Higher | Softer, more garment-like | Good; suited to branded ranges | Workwear brands, chain-store ranges |
These are market-typical positions, and the final result depends on the exact base fabric, coating process and seam work. For a deeper material comparison, see our PU vs PVC rainwear guide. If your program is price-led, look first at PVC-coated polyester or PEVA. If appearance and wearer comfort matter, look at PU. If the garment will be worn daily, ask for Oxford-based options. For a hi-vis program, choose the base fabric together with the fluorescent color, tape layout and the standard your market requires.
A Coated Fabric Is Not a Finished Waterproof Garment
Waterproof fabric can still leak at the seams, hood or closures. Before approving a model, confirm how the seams are finished (taped or heat-sealed), how the hood is constructed (for example concealed or attached), and how the front closure is handled. For example, DL1113 is fully seam taped, and our DL1112 and DL1114 suits use a concealed hood.
Thickness numbers also need context. A 0.20mm coating is not automatically better than 0.18mm: base fabric (170T vs 190T), coating quality and seam work all affect real performance, so write the full specification into the PO and approve against a physical sample.
Hi-Vis Rainwear: Four Things Buyers Should Not Confuse
The garment can carry reflective tape.
Fluorescent base color plus a defined tape layout.
Layout planned around EN ISO 20471 requirements.
Independent test documentation for the final product.
Our hi-vis models offer reflective layout options designed around EN ISO 20471 requirements. Whether a finished garment reaches step 4 depends on the final fabric, the tape area and independent testing. If your tender or end customer needs a specific class, state it in the RFQ and ask for the tape layout drawing and relevant test documentation before approving production.
For a deeper comparison of the standards behind these terms, read our ANSI/ISEA 107 vs EN ISO 20471 guide.
Other reflective options include DL1014 (knee-length long raincoat), DL1018 (PU-coated Oxford suit) and DL1130 (reflective PVC raincoat).
PU Rain Jackets for Distributor and Retail Chain Ranges
When the garment has to sit on a rail or carry a brand, the 0.45mm polyester PU jackets are the usual choice: softer feel, cleaner look, and cuts for men and women. DL1407 is the classic yellow jacket, DL1193 is a straightforward attached-hood jacket, DL1194 adds an inner lining for cooler or shoulder-season selling, and DL3026 is a navy raincoat with REACH / OEKO-TEX material options for buyers with chemical-compliance requirements.

Uniform, Contractor and Promotional Programs
For uniform and contractor programs, a plain two-piece suit that can be reordered every season matters more than styling: DL1114 in navy blue, or DL1112 in fluorescent orange, fluorescent yellow or green. For volume giveaways and event stock, DL1118 is an OEM-ready PEVA poncho in multiple colors, and DL1061 is a packable ripstop poncho with a carry pouch.
The model for your market may sit in between. You can compare every construction in the wholesale lightweight rainwear range.
Sample Approval, Repeat Orders and Compliance
- Approve against a physical sample: check fabric hand, seam finish, hood, closures, tape position and color before bulk production.
- Lock the specification: base fabric, coating thickness, seam method, tape layout, size chart and packaging should match the approved sample in the PO.
- Color and shade tolerance: hi-vis and custom colors should be approved against a physical standard so repeat orders stay consistent.
- Size grading and cut: men’s, women’s or unisex, and the size range your market needs.
- Compliance documents: state REACH, OEKO-TEX or 6P-free requirements, and any hi-vis standard, in the RFQ so the right material is quoted. Remember that a fabric test report is not a garment certificate: see CE garment certification vs. fabric test reports.
- Packaging: individual polybag, printed bag or retail pack, plus carton marking for your warehouse.
MOQ, OEM and Private Label
MOQ depends on the model, fabric, color count and packaging, so we quote it per project. The most efficient way to start is to choose the closest base model, then tell us what you want to change: custom colors, reflective tape layouts, private label branding, size grading, retail packaging and compliance documentation are available across the range. Adjusting an existing pattern is usually faster than developing a new one. FOB terms are available, with Ningbo and Shanghai as our usual ports; the final port is confirmed per order. Frequently Asked Questions
At minimum: base fabric, coating type and thickness, seam method, hood and closure style, color, tape layout (if any), size chart, packaging, and any compliance requirement such as REACH, OEKO-TEX or EN ISO 20471.
PVC-coated polyester is typically the lower-cost option with a firmer hand. PU-coated fabric is softer and more garment-like, which suits branded workwear and retail chain ranges.
No. Thickness is only one factor. Base fabric (such as 170T vs 190T), coating quality and seam construction also determine durability, so approve the full specification on a sample.
Seam finish, hood and closure construction, fabric hand, color against your standard, reflective tape position, size and packaging.
No. Reflective tape is only one element. Compliance depends on the fluorescent fabric, tape area and independent testing of the finished garment. State the required class in your RFQ.
It varies by model, fabric, color count and packaging. Send your target model and quantity and we will quote the MOQ for that project.
Yes. Custom colors, reflective tape layouts, private label branding, size grading and retail packaging are available across the range.
