Neither PU nor PVC is universally superior — the right choice depends on your application, budget, and compliance requirements. Polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are two widely used coating materials in industrial rainwear. Their differences in construction, flexibility, weight, cost and compliance can make one more suitable than the other for a particular application or market.

What Do Buyers Actually Mean by PU and PVC Rainwear?

In B2B rainwear sourcing, “PU rainwear” and “PVC rainwear” usually refer to garments made from coated textile fabrics. The fabric construction is therefore an important part of the specification.

For PVC, we generally pay closer attention to thickness and fabric construction than GSM alone — coating weight can be influenced by formulation choices that do not necessarily reflect better physical performance. In Southeast Asian markets, PVC rainwear continues to be widely used in many traditional applications, and buyers there are often familiar with its characteristics and cost advantages.

When PU Rainwear May Be the Better Choice

PU-coated fabrics are generally softer, lighter, and more flexible than PVC constructions. They generally offer better flexibility across a wider temperature range than many traditional PVC constructions, although actual low-temperature performance depends on the formulation and fabric construction. This can make PU a comfortable option for workers who move frequently or wear the garment for extended shifts.

For many European and North American OEM projects, buyers may prefer PU or other alternatives because of their internal chemical, sustainability or product-policy requirements. However, material selection should be based on the customer’s specific requirements rather than geography alone.

For frequent bending, climbing or long shifts, flexibility should be a key selection factor. PU is often a good starting point, but the final decision should be confirmed with an actual fabric or garment sample.

When PVC Rainwear May Be the Better Choice

PVC-coated fabrics are heavier and denser than PU. They offer good durability and can be suitable for applications involving rough surfaces or mechanical stress where garment mobility is less critical. PVC remains widely used in Southeast Asian markets and can be a practical choice for traditional heavy-duty and cost-sensitive rainwear programs.

Why PVC Rainwear Should Not Be Compared by GSM Alone

One of the most common issues in PVC rainwear sourcing is the assumption that higher GSM (grams per square meter) means better quality.

Higher GSM does not automatically mean better PVC fabric. During PVC coating production, fillers such as calcium carbonate can increase fabric weight. If excessive filler is used, the material may become harder, stiffer and more brittle. A high GSM number does not necessarily represent better physical performance.

For PVC rainwear, buyers should evaluate thickness, construction, flexibility, physical performance and actual fabric samples together with GSM. If a fabric feels unusually heavy but also stiff or brittle, don’t assume that the higher GSM means better quality. Ask the supplier about the fabric construction and request an actual sample and relevant physical performance data.

PVC Rainwear Compliance: What Buyers Should Confirm

PVC rainwear requires particular attention to restricted-substance requirements. For European and North American projects, some buyers specify phthalate restrictions such as 6P-free requirements, while others may apply stricter internal chemical standards. The specific requirements vary by customer and are not determined by the material alone.

We have also encountered projects where customers preferred EVA rainwear instead of PVC, even when a PVC material was offered as 13P-free. This is why we recommend confirming the customer’s exact restricted-substance requirements before fabric production rather than assuming that a general “6P-free” or “13P-free” statement will satisfy every project.

For projects with strict chemical restrictions, buyers may consider alternative coating materials such as PU or EVA. However, the final material should still be verified against the customer’s specific testing and compliance requirements — switching material category does not replace the need for proper chemical testing and documentation.

For private-label projects, the brand owner’s internal restricted-substance requirements may also be stricter than the general market requirements.
