FR Rainwear vs. Regular PVC Rain Suits: What the Test Report Reveals

If you’re outfitting a crew working around flash-fire or arc-flash risk — oil & gas, utilities, petrochemical, mining — the question of “do we really need FR-rated rain gear?” comes up more often than you’d think. The honest answer sits in the test data, not in the marketing copy on either product.

The Core Difference: What Happens After Flame Contact

Regular PVC or PU rain suits are built for one job: keeping water out. They’re not engineered or tested for flame behavior. Expose one to open flame and there’s no standard governing how it should perform — because it was never designed to be evaluated that way.

FR rainwear is built and tested to a specific standard. The most common for North and Latin American markets is ASTM D6413 (vertical flame test); for the European market, it’s EN ISO 14116. These standards measure exactly what happens in the critical seconds after flame contact:

  • Afterflame Time Does the fabric keep burning on its own after the ignition source is removed?
  • Afterglow Time Does it keep smoldering — and potentially re-ignite?
  • Char Length How far does the physical damage spread up the garment?
  • Melting & Dripping Does the material break down into secondary burn hazards?

Side-by-Side: Verified Data vs. No Data

Here’s what a passing FR rainsuit result looks like, from a third-party SGS report on Style DL1491FR (0.35mm PVC/polyester FR rainsuit, tested per ASTM D6413/D6413M-22) — compared against what you get with an untested standard rainsuit:

Evaluation Metric ✓ FR-Rated Rainsuit (DL1491FR) ✗ Untested Regular PVC/PU Rainwear
Afterflame Time NIL
Self-extinguishes instantly
Not Tested
No guarantee — can sustain flame
Afterglow Time NIL
Zero residual smoldering
Not Tested
No guarantee — can continue to glow
Char Length ~101–104mm
Consistent, contained damage
Not Measured
No structural boundary data
Third-Party Verification Yes — SGS & AITEX reports with specimen-level data Typically none, or limited to waterproof metrics only

With standard rainwear, you’re dealing with a total unknown. FR-rated gear replaces that safety blindspot with a documented, repeatable safety margin.

Two Things That Get Confused in Sourcing

1

“Waterproof” is not the same as “Flame Resistant”

A rainsuit can be excellent at keeping water out while having zero flame-resistance. The PVC or PU coating that makes it waterproof isn’t inherently FR — that requires specialized fabric treatments or FR-rated formulations, and it must be tested to be proven.

2

“FR-Treated” is not the same as “FR-Tested”

Some suppliers claim their fabric is “FR-treated” without producing a report. Treatment is a manufacturing step. A numbered, dated report from an accredited lab is the only legal verification that the treatment actually works on the finished garment.

4 Questions to Ask Your Supplier

Before choosing between a standard rainsuit and an FR-rated one for a hazardous-duty crew, require your supplier to answer these:

Supplier Verification Checklist
  • Is this fabric tested to ASTM D6413 (Americas) or EN ISO 14116 (Europe)? Can you provide the lab report number?
  • Can you provide the full, specimen-level test report showing individual data for all 5 test strips per direction — not just a one-page certificate?
  • Does the style number and fabric weight on the test report exactly match the product being quoted?
  • How recent is the report? Does it reflect the current production batch and coating formulation?

Bottom Line

For crews working around ignition sources, “waterproof” alone isn’t a safety spec — it’s a comfort feature. FR-rated, third-party-tested rainwear is the only version of “flame resistant” that comes with evidence behind the claim.

We test every FR rainwear production batch through accredited third-party labs (SGS and AITEX) and provide full, specimen-level reports on request. Ask for current documentation on any style before you order.
