Bib Pants vs Waist Pants: What Is the Difference?

Waist pants are the more common style, mostly sold as part of a jacket-and-pants rain suit and also ordered on their own. They are easier to put on and take off, and suit programmes where flexibility and cost matter most. Waist pants usually have no elastic, or only a short elastic section at the sides, with a snap or buckle closure.

Bib pants add front and back coverage up to the chest, held by adjustable straps. They keep mud, splash and spray away from the lower back, so they are the usual choice for wet ground work, fishing and heavy-duty use. Typical features include adjustable side openings and plastic buckles. They are mostly made in PVC-coated polyester, PU or PU/PVC fabrics.

PVC or PU for Rain Pants?

The choice depends on how the garment is used, the required flexibility and durability, and your budget. There is no single right answer — both materials are widely used across industrial markets.

PVC (e.g. 0.35mm PVC/polyester): typically stiffer, and many buyers see it as sturdy and long-lasting. Common constructions are around 0.35mm. A back vent can be added for breathability.

PU (e.g. 0.45mm): typically softer and more flexible, with better comfort in cold weather. A back vent is also possible. Performance varies with the exact coating weight and base fabric.

If you need a wider comparison of fabric construction and compliance, read our PU vs PVC rainwear guide. To browse styles, see Heavy-Duty Rainwear and PU Rainwear.

Applications by Industry

Mining. Abrasion, mud and long shifts call for durable fabric. PVC-coated polyester or PU/PVC suits are common, and hi-vis colours depend on the site rules. See mining and quarrying workwear and DL1190, a 0.45mm PU/PVC suit with bib trousers.

Agriculture. Farm programmes are often cost-sensitive, and workers need easy movement and easy cleaning. Plain colours in PVC or PU work well. See agriculture and farming.

Road maintenance. For road maintenance programmes, confirm whether high-visibility PPE is required by the project specification and applicable local regulations. Where required, verify the garment class, fluorescent background material, reflective tape configuration and supporting documentation before ordering. See municipal and road maintenance and DL1146 Hi-Vis 3-piece suit.

Commercial fishing. This is a special case, using thicker 0.60mm PVC T/C fabric. See DL1192.

Specifications and Compliance to Confirm

  • Thickness: 0.35mm is typical for PVC. 0.45mm is typical for PU and PU/PVC. 0.60mm is used for fishing pants.
  • Waterproof level: confirm the hydrostatic pressure requirement (e.g. 8,000mm or 10,000mm). Existing fabric test data is available on request; custom targets can be reviewed against the selected material.
  • Reflective tape and colours: state width, position and the standard applicable to your market.
  • Sizes, packaging and logo: reviewed against the selected model and order quantity. Extra costs are charged at actual cost.
